The Sawyer Seminar on "Urban Art and Urban Form" at the University of Chicago invites applications for a Mellon Postgraduate or Postdoctoral Fellow position for the academic year 2017-18. This one-year position, funded by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, will be awarded to a scholar or practitioner pursuing work in a topic related to the project.
This proposed seminar on Urban Art and Urban Form seeks to establish a conversation—across the arts and disciplines—about how art contributes to the formation and transformation of urban space. What role has art played and what role can it play in shaping the urban environment? How do built spaces and public artworks interact with one another or converge? How do we conceive the material, aesthetic dimension of urban design (from architecture and landscape design, to pedestrian networks, place-making, and city planning)? Learn more about the Seminar here: https://urban.uchicago.edu/page/urban-art-and-urban-form
The Mellon Postgraduate or Postdoctoral Fellow will be an integral member of the seminar and of its Steering Committee, participating in staff meetings and helping to shape programmatic events as well as the concluding conference. The Fellow will also present a paper and/or artistic and design work during the year and will serve as one moderator and respondent at the conference.
We will also arrange to pair the fellow with a Faculty Mentor in a related discipline, in order to better integrate him or her into the disciplinary structure of the University and in keeping with established mentoring protocols at the University. Though this is a research – not a teaching – position – the scholar may offer a one-quarter research seminar in his or her field of expertise under the auspices of that department.
This position carries a salary of $50,000 per year, plus benefits. Applicants may not hold any other appointment during the period of the Sawyer Scholar position.
Applicants will be required:
1. To hold the PhD, MFA, MArch, or other relevant professional degree conferred by the start of the 2017 academic year and no more than five years preceding that period;
2. To submit an agenda for a research, artistic, and/or design project that relates to the Seminar’s theme;
3. To show promise as a scholar, artist, or designer, and as a teacher;
4. To submit three academic or professional references;
5. To submit a CV;
6. And to submit one writing sample (dissertation chapter preferred) or a portfolio (of artistic or design work), or a combination of the two.
For fullest consideration, complete application materials are due by Friday, February 17, 2017. Electronic submission preferred (with subject heading “Mellon Sawyer Postgraduate Fellowship.”) All application materials and questions should be addressed to:
